Campaign Action to Date

Concerned that detailed information was not in the public domain and that people were:

  • Not aware of the proposal.
  • Not aware that the proposal would be considered by UDC within the current consultation.
  • Most importantly, we wanted to ensure that residents knew, that if there voices were to be heard, they needed to write to UDC prior to the 11th Jan.

With these points in mind, the Group’s efforts have concentrated on:

  • Raising awareness of the Chater Homes/Green Issues housing proposal and the plans as they currently exist.
  • Clarifying the process and making it easy for anyone to lodge an official objection to Uttlesford District Council’s Planning Dept.

Our actions have been to raise awareness via:

  • the many Posters and Billboards;
  • going door to door handing out leaflets and discussing the issues. 2000 leaflets were delivered in Little Dunmow including Oakwood Park, Felsted, Stebbing, Barnston and the outskirts of Great Dunmow;
  • we also actively went out to the press to gain publicity for the campaign.

All methods encouraged individuals to contact us for further information and assistance and we put together an information pack which when contacted (either by phone or email), we were able to send out:

  • We provided the contact details of Uttlesford Planning Department and the deadline for responses. Plus our details if they required help and assistance.
  • In response to requests for information, the Group sent out approx 150 information packs via email and hard copy. Members of the Group also sent out on an individual basis to all those they were aware of that may be interested (friends/family/colleagues).

What have we achieved?

We believe that as a Group we have largely achieved what we set out to achieve – to raise awareness. We are aware of a significant number of objections to the Chelmer mead proposal having been made and we are closely monitoring the outcome of the consultation and await UDCs decision on the Chelmer Mead proposal.

What can we expect to happen next?

UDC will review and assess all submissions made during the consultation process and submit a final report to the Council for review and approval in March/April 2008. Should the report determine that any new alternative option meets the Core Strategy guidelines and is preferable to the preferred option 4, then UDC will likely go out to a fresh round of public consultations.

The final Core Strategy will be submitted to the Government in the Spring of 2008, but this may be delayed should there be another round of public consultations. The final Core Strategy will be submitted to Hazel Blears Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, to check that UDC have followed the appropriate procedures and consultation process before it is formally approved or it could be subject to public examination.

Chater Homes’ revised housing proposal was submitted to UDC on the final day of consultation, 11th January 2008. A copy of their full submission documents can be located from the document archive.

The Group are currently preparing to formally respond to UDC regarding the Chater Homes final submission.
